The Secretariat of the Federal Revenue of Brazil seized a total of US$ 6,283,443 in smuggled merchandise in Foz do Iguaçu/PR in October. The amount represents a reduction of 16% in relation to the same period last year.
Vehicles were the most significant seized products. 177 were seized this month, totalizing US$ 2,277,696, which represented an increase of 27% with regard to October/2007 and 41% with regard to the first ten months of 2007.
Electronic gadgets also reached an outstanding amount. Seized products in October totalized US$ 1,279,126 an increase of 2% when compared to October 2007 and 10% with regard to the amount accrued during the year, which comes to US$ 11,154,316. This item is one of the record-holders in seized amounts in each month of the year.
Besides merchandise and vehicles, drugs, ammunition and a gun were also seized.
The accrued seized amount during the year (January to October/2008) reached US$ 69,170,666 in merchandise and vehicles, an increase of 7% when compared to the same period in 2007.
Bus with cigarettes
On November 8th, RFB inspectors in a southern city seized approximately 600 cigarette boxes found on a bus with license from Sao Paulo.
The driver abandoned the bus when it was approached by the inspection crew. The bus and the cigarettes were taken to the Office of the Federal Revenue of Brazil in Foz do Iguaçu.
