FREE FLIGHT OPERATION – The Federal Revenue of Brazil investigates fraud in the entrance of luggage at the Rio de Janeiro International Airport

The Federal Revenue of Brazil (RFB) triggered today (September 01 st ) the "Free Flight Operation", with the purpose of fighting a criminal organization suspected of defrauding the tax authorities.

The Free Flight Operation, carried out jointly by the Federal Revenue of Brazil, the Federal Police, and the Federal Public Prosecution Service, assesses indications of perpetration of several crimes committed by the investigated criminal organization, among which there is smuggling.

The actions occur in Rio de Janeiro, where 39 search and seizure warrants are being enforced at the suspects' companies and homes.

The joint investigations began in 2008 and it was verified that the Rio de Janeiro International Airport – Galeão was used as entrance door for foreign products without the due collection of Import Duties. With the intermediation of employees of service-providing companies that operate at the airport, employees of the Federal Revenue of Brazil did not inspect the luggage of certain international flight passengers, thus facilitating the perpetration of the crime of smuggling.

The Deputy Superintendent of the Federal Revenue of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro, Marcus Vinícius Vidal Pontes, will participate in a press conference at 11:00 a.m. at the auditorium of the Federal Police Superintendence in Rio de Janeiro, where other information regarding the Free Flight Operation will be disclosed.
